Tree: Colchester

Tree Name  Colchester
Description  Colchester was originally Camulodunum, an Iron Age settlement that became the first Roman city and capital of Roman Britannia. While the identity of "Old King Cole" is a matter of legend and speculation, local tradition and some historical accounts connect him to Colchester, as he was said to be a king of Britain who ruled from there, potentially the father of St. Helena. The most significant link to Colchester is through Coel Hen, a historical figure who was a post-Roman king of Northern Britain. Local tradition emerged in the 12th century, with Geoffrey of Monmouth's writings, claiming that Coel (or Cole) founded Colchester, or was a king whose daughter, Helena, married the Roman emperor Constantius.
